Narvar vs AfterShip vs parcelLab: who should own your tracking page

Order tracking, shipping notifications and the branded tracking page are a separate decision from returns. Here is how the three options differ for a Shopify brand.

The short answer

Pick AfterShip if you want tracking, notifications and returns from one vendor with a short implementation. Pick Narvar if you have retail-scale volume, carrier complexity and a team that will actually configure delivery estimates and tracking page content. Pick parcelLab if your pain is international, multi-carrier and multi-region messaging rather than a US-only tracking page. If you only need the basics and already pay a returns platform, check whether tracking is included before you buy anything at all.

The short comparison

All three replace the default Shopify order status page and own shipping notifications. They differ in how much setup they need, and in how much else they try to sell you.

AfterShip

AfterShip is a practical answer when tracking is a problem you want solved this quarter. Carrier coverage is wide, the Shopify install is quick, and you can add returns and order routing under one contract rather than stacking vendors. Brands that move tracking away from a more expensive incumbent land here, and the migration is rarely the hard part.

The weak spot is support. When a carrier mapping breaks or a notification stops firing, reaching a person quickly is not guaranteed. If your CX team depends on the tracking page to deflect WISMO tickets, plan for that. AfterShip also sells a range of adjacent products, so expect the account conversation to widen over time.

AG1 and ELEGOO both run AfterShip Order Tracking on their storefronts.

Narvar

Narvar is the enterprise option and reads that way in a demo. The strongest part of the pitch is the delivery promise: showing a believable delivery date earlier in the journey. Carrier breadth is real, and large retailers with a mixed shipping network get value others will not.

Two things push brands out. Price is the first, and it is judged against how much of the platform the team actually uses. The second is the experience itself: the returns flow and the tracking setup feel dated next to newer tools, and exchange handling has lagged. If you are buying Narvar mainly for returns, compare it against a returns-first vendor before you sign.

parcelLab

parcelLab is built around international shipping. If you ship to several regions with different carriers, different languages and different delivery expectations, it handles branching that US-first tools treat as an edge case. Brands evaluating AfterShip and parcelLab side by side for a global footprint pick parcelLab for that reason.

The cost is familiarity. Fewer US teams have used it, so you will spend more time building internal confidence, and your agency may not have an implementation playbook ready.

Where returns fit

Tracking and returns get bundled in sales calls, but they are separate decisions with separate failure modes. Returns platforms are consolidating: several now sell tracking pages, shipping protection and support tooling alongside RMAs. That is convenient until one piece underperforms and you cannot unbundle it.

If your returns vendor is working, buying tracking from the same vendor is reasonable. If it is not, do not let a tracking contract lock you in.

How to decide

IfYou ship US-only and your main goal is fewer WISMO tickets
ThenAfterShip. Fastest path, and returns can ride along on one contract.
IfA delivery date on the product page would change conversion for you
ThenNarvar, and make them show the promise engine on your SKUs, not a demo catalog.
IfYou have several regions, carriers and languages
ThenparcelLab. US-first tools will cost you in workarounds.
IfYou already pay a returns platform that includes a tracking page
ThenTurn it on and measure ticket deflection before buying a second vendor.
IfYour CX team escalates tracking bugs weekly
ThenWeight support commitments heavily and ask for named contacts in writing.
IfYour current vendor is expensive and you use one module
ThenPrice the switch. Cost per feature actually used is the number that moves.

Questions people ask

Is AfterShip good enough to replace Narvar?

For a Shopify brand shipping domestically, usually yes. AfterShip covers branded tracking, carrier updates and notifications, and bundles returns. Brands go the other way when they need carrier-level complexity, delivery date messaging on site, or retail network features that Narvar built for large retailers.

Do I need a tracking app if I already use a returns platform?

Sometimes not. Several returns platforms now include a tracking page and post-purchase notifications. Turn that on first and measure how many where-is-my-order tickets it deflects. Buy a dedicated tracking vendor only if the included version falls short on carrier coverage or notification control.

What is the main reason brands leave Narvar?

Cost measured against usage. Teams buy the full platform, use the tracking page and little else, and the renewal number stops making sense. The other reason is the returns and exchange experience, which brands move to a returns-first vendor instead.
