The short answer

Pick Corso if you want protection, returns, warranties and tracking from one vendor with a US-based team taking the claims off your queue. Pick ShipInsure if you want a per-order payout schedule published before you sign and 24/7 claim support for shoppers. Pick Route if branded tracking and remarketing matter as much as coverage, and consumer-funded pricing suits you. Pick Onward if you want Checkout+ bundling protection with cashback and free returns, and Seel if you want returnable final sale items and delivery protection with Seel paying the refunds.

Corso

Corso bundles shipping protection with returns and exchanges, warranties and registration, order tracking, order editing and analytics. That bundle is a reason it wins deals: a brand replacing a protection app and a returns app at once only has to onboard one vendor. Warranties alone can be the reason to buy it.

Pricing is a share of the revenue the platform generates, mainly the protection fees shoppers pay at checkout. The pricing page says there are no fixed fees, monthly minimums, setup costs, claim caps or long-term contracts, and that you can cancel anytime. Corso Concierge, a US-based team, works claims seven days a week, which is what you are buying if support volume is the problem.

Resolve the legal question before you launch. Protection sold at checkout sits close to insurance regulation, and legal review is a reason brands pull the product. Ask Corso to put the underwriting and licensing structure in writing.

ShipInsure

ShipInsure covers orders that are lost, stolen, damaged in transit, defective or sent wrong. Installing is free. Shoppers add protection at checkout, and the merchant payout is published as a per-order amount that steps up across volume bands, from 1 to 500 orders a month up to 25,000, with higher volume handled by contacting ShipInsure. You can model your side of the deal before a call.

It also sells returns with AI screening of fraudulent returns and one-click exchanges, a branded claims wizard on your own subdomain, branded tracking, and carbon offsetting donated from every order. Claims support runs 24/7 for customers. It integrates with Gorgias, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Recharge, Stay Ai, Appstle, Awtomic, ShipBob and ShipCalm.

The risk is attach rate. Consumer-funded protection only pays when enough shoppers opt in, and thin adoption at checkout is a reason brands walk away. Run it as a timed test and set a floor you will accept before you sign.

Route

Route pairs protection with a visual tracking experience and remarketing, plus returns and a Cash Back offer that gives shoppers a discount on their next order when they add protection. Its Shopify app holds a 4.0 rating from 375 reviews and has been listed since 2019. Brands including 360 Cookware, CAPiTA Snowboards and elago run Route on their storefronts.

Pricing is a Standard plan with no monthly fee, consumer-funded pricing and no hidden fees, or a Custom plan with flat fee, volume based or consumer funded options and monthly billing. The site lists SOC 2 certification, GDPR and CCPA/CPRA compliance, which helps if your security review is strict.

Route also carries the clearest switching story in this group. The complaints cluster: checkout breakage, economics that read as better for the vendor than the brand, aggressive sales outreach, and shoppers who file a claim and then email your support team anyway. That last one decides the value. If the vendor does not absorb the ticket, you are paying a revenue share for a tracking page, and building a simple internal reship policy becomes the alternative.

Onward

Onward sells Checkout+, a single checkout offer that stacks protection, cashback, a quality guarantee and free returns. In the sample checkout on its site the shopper pays a fee for those benefits. The site says there are no SaaS fees and Checkout+ costs the merchant nothing. Beyond protection it sells returns, branded tracking, order editing, loyalty and memberships.

Service is the pitch: dedicated account managers, a direct Slack channel with the Onward team, and a merchant view showing every customer interaction.

Two things push brands out. One is terms: when the deal stops being competitive against what other vendors offer, finance notices. The other is scope, since brands consolidating the whole post-purchase stack want more than one service under one contract. Onward's site lists returns, tracking, order editing and loyalty, so ask which of those you can turn on under your agreement rather than assuming the whole list.

Seel

Seel is the only one of the five whose fact sheet says it makes final sale items returnable. Worry-Free Purchase gives shoppers no-questions-asked returns added at checkout, Worry-Free Delivery covers lost, damaged, stolen or delayed shipments, and Extended Warranty adds coverage on higher-value orders. Seel pays the associated refunds. Insurance benefits are provided by Seel Insurance Inc. or Arch Specialty Insurance Company depending on jurisdiction.

Pricing is published as plans. The free plan has no platform fee and includes Worry-Free Delivery, Worry-Free Purchase, Extended Warranty, dashboard analytics and order tracking for 250 orders. Growth is a flat monthly rate per store for one AI agency, billed by usage. The AI agencies cover support across voice, email and chat, plus resale and sales attribution.

If your returns policy is the constraint, for example a heavy final sale or clearance mix, Seel addresses a problem the other four do not list. Worry-Free Purchase holds a 4.9 rating from 297 reviews and carries the Built for Shopify badge.

How to decide

IfYour support team is drowning in where-is-my-order and lost package tickets
ThenBuy on claim handling. Corso Concierge works seven days a week and ShipInsure offers 24/7 claims support to customers. Ask either one what happens when a shopper emails you instead of them.
IfYou are replacing a protection app and a returns app in the same quarter
ThenShortlist Corso and Onward. Both sell protection, returns, tracking and order editing under one vendor.
IfFinance wants the merchant economics on paper before a sales call
ThenStart with ShipInsure, which publishes per-order payouts by volume band, and Seel, which publishes flat monthly plans.
IfA lot of your catalog is final sale or clearance
ThenLook at Seel. Worry-Free Purchase makes final sale items returnable and Seel pays the refunds.
IfLegal has to approve anything sold at checkout
ThenGet the underwriting entity in writing first. Seel names Seel Insurance Inc. and Arch Specialty Insurance Company; ask the others for the equivalent before you launch.
IfA protection vendor has gone wrong for you before
ThenTest on a subset of traffic, watch attach rate and ticket deflection for a full cycle, and confirm you can leave. Corso's pricing page says no long-term contracts and cancel anytime.

Questions people ask

Which shipping protection vendor pays the merchant the most?

It depends on the shape of the deal, not just the headline split. ShipInsure publishes a per-order merchant payout that steps up across monthly volume bands, with the largest volume handled by contacting them. Corso charges a share of the revenue the platform generates with no fixed fees or minimums per its pricing page. Route offers consumer-funded pricing on its Standard plan, or a Custom plan with flat fee or volume based options. Model your own attach rate against each shape rather than comparing headline splits.

Does shipping protection actually reduce customer support tickets?

Only if the vendor resolves claims without the shopper bouncing back to you. That is a common disappointment in this category: the claim gets filed with the vendor and the customer emails the brand anyway. Corso routes claims to a US-based team seven days a week, ShipInsure offers 24/7 claims support to customers, and Onward gives merchants a view of every customer interaction. Ask for the denial flow and the response time commitment in writing.

Is there a protection app that covers final sale returns, not just shipping?

Seel does. Worry-Free Purchase lets shoppers add no-questions-asked returns at checkout, including on final sale items, and Seel pays the associated refunds. It also sells Worry-Free Delivery for lost, damaged, stolen or delayed shipments and an Extended Warranty for higher-value orders. The free plan has no platform fee and covers 250 orders.
